WEAVING A TAPESTRY OF WOMEN'S SELF-RELIANCE WORKSHOP: Training the Trainers with
ROSE (MIRABAI) LORD
https://sites.google.com/site/rosespages/women-s-self-reliance-program)
Global events during the last three years have sadly brought food insecurity to people's awareness in unprecedented ways.
This workshop trains people to give women in economically depressed areas the chance for a better life by teaching intensive vegetable gardening, proper nutrition, and micro-enterprise. The information offered this weekend may someday prove a key to survival.
Ms. Lord has had the opportunity to share the information with women in five countries and a variety of climates and has seen, firsthand, the positive outcomes for the women and their families.
The workshop is appropriate both for experienced gardeners and those new to gardening. The only requirement is a commitment to helping women better their lives through this training.

There are five modules plus a practical demonstration, and participants must complete each session:
Session 1: The Poverty Perspective (3 hours)
What does extreme poverty look like? How does it affect the attitudes towards life of those who live it? While not all poor people think alike, there are common characteristics in the paradigm of people who have lived their lives in a state of extreme poverty. What are those characteristics ? How does it affect the way that “poor” people perceive aid workers? And how can we understand, respect and honor their perspective?
Session 2: Nutrition Basics (2 hours)
We will review the basic components of the diet, including the three basic nutrients – carbohydrates, fats and protein,, and the micro-nutrients for which our daily needs are expressed in milligrams or micrograms. We will look at the diets of the world's healthiest people and discuss how we can help participants evaluate their diets and identify means of improving them as necessary. A basic introduction to Ayurvedic dietary guidelines will be offered.
Session 3: Spiritual Gardening I (2 hours)
Gardening is the core of the Women's Self-Reliance Program. Through our Sattwic Peace Gardens we strive to interact with the earth in a conscious manner that will provide us with life-sustaining food while nurturing the soil and honoring all the elements. We will look at watering techniques, composting, companion gardening, succession planting and how these methodologies can be applied to a variety of gardens both large and small
Session 4: Spiritual Gardening II (2 hours)
In this session we will address gardening challenges including poor soil; too much or too little water; two-legged, four-legged and multi-legged pests. We will also discuss seed-saving methods and why this is a vital element of the self-reliance program. Other sustainable and concious gardening systems such as Permaculture, Forest Gardening, and Restorative Gardening will be presented.
Session 5: Microenterprise (2 hours)
Microenterprise simply means a very small business. But regardless of the size of a business venture, there are principles and practices that will determine its chances for success. We will discuss the qualities of a good business person, the advantages as well as the difficulties of operating your own business, how to get started and how to keep going. A format for a basic business plan will also be provided.
Session 6: Hands-On Installation of a Square Meter Garden (2 hours)
We are asking participants for a firm commitment to attend the full workshop. In addition, it would be helpful if you can identify one person or a group with which you can share what you will learn.
The registration fee is $35, to compensate for Ms. Lord’s travel expenses and to cover the cost of materials. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
Please email shantiyoga.sol@gmail.com with questions, or to register.
We look forward to hearing from you.
