| Shanti Yoga offers a
multi-level experiential program emphasizing a balance between body,
mind and spirit and exploring the art of yoga in daily life. Hatha Yoga
routines generally follow the classical system as taught by Swami
Sivananda.
The following classes are held at the Center in Bethesda, MD. Classes are also held in downtown Washington, D.C., at Georgetown University, the Guy Mason Recreation Center in Georgetown, and The Maternity Center. Other locations may be arranged. Foundation of Yoga: For people who are new to yoga or have been away from it for a long time and for practitioners seeking a review of the basic precepts, this course introduces yoga philosophy and teaches a basic Hatha Yoga routine. Open Classes: All levels of students can join these classes. Positive
Pregnancy and Parenting Through Yoga: Pregnant
women and mothers of infants and small children need
special attention. It is important to learn self care and to realize the
impact that the mother has on the new life. Pre-Natal Yoga for
expectant mothers, Mother/Baby Yoga (with infants and toddlers),
Women’s Water Yoga and Childbirth Education (HypnoBirthing) classes
are offered. Also, “Spiritual Motherhood: Creating a Peaceful
Family” is a new program for mothers with classes on Ayurveda and
other methods of self-knowledge/ self care. Please click on Water Yoga
Water yoga is an excellent way to deeply relax, while simultaneously
rejuvenating one's body, mind and spirit. The warm, soothing
environment offers the self-care that so many of us need, whether
dealing with a physical ailment, a stressful situation, or just life's
daily demands. It is also a great way to exercise for anyone who
loves the water and especially for people with conditions that might
limit their options for movement. The class includes yoga
postures, breathing and relaxation in a warm, private pool. Come
at our scheduled time or set up a private class for yourself or a group
of friends. Thursday night class is for women only. Shanti Marga: For those interested in pursuing the study of yoga to higher levels. You may call for a brochure or speak to the director about this program. Shanti Kshatriya: For those who have finished Shanti Marga and have attained a commitment to pursue the path of spiritual development as the most important endeavor of life. Shanti Chakra: Groups of students gathering regularly to do their practice. Private Classes/Consultations: Individual or group sessions at the center or another location.Private classes
in the pool are excellent for special conditions such as arthritis,
muscular disorders, overweight, injury, or any limiting condition and
offer a wonderful opportunity for deep relaxation. It is
especially good for pregnancy as the water lifts the added weight away
and for mothers of children of any age needing a special night to
nurture and recharge themselves. What to wear, what to bring: Bring an empty stomach, your last full meal should have been at least 2 ½ hours before class; snacks may be taken. Wear loose, comfortable clothes such as a sweat suit in winter or shorts and a T-shirt in summer. Avoid zippers, buttons, belts and other bulky items. Come early enough to change your clothes and be on time for class. Bring a large towel or
exercise mat to lay on during class. In winter, you may also bring a
light blanket and socks.
